Image: Six UGA Microbiology graduate students participated in the 2013 ASM Kadner Institute for Graduate Students and Postdoctoral Scientists in Preparation for Careers in Microbiology, which was held July 27-31 in San Jose, California. The institute was developed in 2000 by the ASM Education Board Committee on Graduate and Postdoctoral Education. Participants in the institute have a chance to network, explore career options, and hone their skills in grant writing, scientific presentations, communication and ethics. The institute is an intense, hands on experience. Before arriving at the institute, participants prepare a 10-page grant proposal, a short presentation on their research, and a curriculum vitae for evaluation by institute faculty and peers. Participants also learn about the range of career opportunities in microbiology, including teaching, applied research in industry and service in public health.
