The Microbiology Department is housed within Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. Students in our program are broadly trained in biological, chemical and physical sciences. Following introductory courses in biology and chemistry, students explore advanced topics in the physiology, genetics, pathogenesis and ecology of microorganisms. We currently have about 200 undergraduate majors in the department. Many of our graduating students go on to medical, dental, pharmacy or graduate school at some of the most prestigious professional and graduate schools in the nation.
The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree with a major in Microbiology is a liberal arts degree. This is not a pre-professional degree, but it does prepare students for professional programs. Students who are interested in health sciences (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, optometry, public health) and veterinary medicine will complete most of the pre-requisites necessary to enter those professional programs while working towards completion of the Microbiology major. In addition to professional programs, our students will be prepared to enter graduate programs in the biological sciences and for entry-level technical positions in a variety of settings, including university, hospital, government, biotechnology, and other industries.

Major Required Courses include:
Biochemistry (BCMB 3100), Genetics (GENE 3200), Introductory Microbiology (MIBO 3500), Introductory Microbiology Lab (MIBO 3510L) and Prokaryotic Biology (MIBO 4090). Students will also need to select an intensive lab, two microbiology related courses, a biological elective and an additional math, statistics or computer science class from the approved lists of courses.

While microbiology research courses can work in the major, they are not required to complete the major. However, we highly encourage students to get involved in undergraduate research. Participating in research is often one of the most important factors for admission into graduate level science programs, but the benefits are not limited to those seeking advanced science degrees. Undergraduate research can help our pre-professional students become more competitive applicants to their programs of interest. For those who wish to make the B.S. in Microbiology their terminal degree, research can provide a valuable experiential learning opportunity which students will need if they are seeking employment in a science related field.
